Painter, graphic artist, theatre artist, designer. Studied at the Drawing school in Kiev (1895-96), at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1904-05), at F.Rerberg's studio (1905-10) in Moscow. Participant of exhibitions from 1910 ("The Jack of Diamonds", "The Donkey's Tail", "The Union of Youth", "BLAUENREITER", "Tram B", "0,10", etc.). In 1913 stages opera "The Victory over the Sun " (libretto by A.Kruchyonykh, music by M.Matyushin), creates fist suprematic sketches for the costumes and scenery. Developer of "supremacism" (from 1915), writes brochure "From cubism to supremacism" (1915), then theory works on modern art. Chief master of "The Free Workshops" (1918), taught at the Vitebsk Art Institute (1919-20), founded group "The Establishers of New Art" in Vitebsk (1920), taught at the Moscow Higher Art and Technical Workshops (from 1922), director of the Institute of Artistic Culture (1923-27), professor of the Academy of Arts (from 1922). In 1918 designed "The Mistery-Buffo" by V.Mayakovsky (producer V.Meyerhold), in 1923 painted porcelain. His first personal exhibition was held in Moscow (1919). Lived in Leningrad. Largest artist of Russian avant-guard, his works are kept in many museums of the world. Retrospective exhibitions were held in the State Tretyakov Gallery (1989) and the State Russian Museum (1988-89).
