MARK ZAKHAROVICH CHAGAL (1887-1985)
Painter, graphic artist. Studied at Yu.Pen's studio (1906) in Vitebsk, at the school of the Society for Promition of Arts (1907-08) in St. Petersburg, at S.Seidenberg's studio (1908), at Ye.Zvantseva's school (1908-10) under L.Bakst and M.Dobuzhinsky. Participant of exhibitions from 1911 ("The Salon of the Independent", "The World of Art", "The Donkey's Tail", "The Target", etc.). In 1910-14 lived in Paris in the "Beehive". In 1914 - his personal exhibition in gallery "Sturm" in Berlin. Lived and worked in Vitebsk (1914-20). Headed the art school in Vitebsk (1918), lived in Moscow (1920-22). In 1922 moved to Berlin, participated in "The Exhibition of the Three " (N.Altman, M.Chagal, D.Shterenberg). From 1923 lived in Paris. Personal exhibition in gallery "Barbazante" (1924) in Paris, his first retrospective exhibition - in Basel (1933). Largest master of Russian avant-guard.
