MIKHAIL VASILYEVICH MATYUSHIN (1861-1934)
Painter, graphic artist, composer. Studied at the Moscow conservatoire (1876-80), at the school of the Society for Promotion of Arts (1894-98) in St. Petersburg, at the Academy of Arts (1902-05) under J.Cionglinsky, at M.Dobuzhinsky's and L.Bakst's studio (1906-07). Participant of exhibitions from 1908 ("The Modern Trends in Art", "The Triangle", "The Union of Youth", etc.). Organizer and member of "The Union of Youth" (1910-14), composed music for opera "The Victory over the Sun" (1913), for plays by his wife, artist and poet Yelena Guro. Taught at "The Free Workshops"/Higher Art and Technical Workshops (1918-26), chief of the Department of organic culture at the Institute of Artistic Culture in Moscow (1924-27). Founder of group "Zorved", one of the largest masters of Russian avant-guard.
