GERASIMOV
Sergey Vasilievich
Painter, graphic artist, drew book illustrations. Studied at the Stroganov Art and Industrial School (1901—07), then at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1907—12), K.A. Korovin and S.V. Ivanov’s apprentice. Apart from portraits and landscapes often turned to the scenes of national life. His best works were rather small sketches of Russian nature (“Winter” (1939), “The ice has floated away” (1945), etc.). Among the graphic works the most popular ones are the illustrations for N.A. Nekrasov’s “Who can be Happy and Free in Russia?” (1933—36) and for M.Gorky’s novel “The Artamonov Business” (1939—54); in 1958 these works were awarded a gold medal at the World exhibition in Brussels. In 1956 Gerasimov was granted the title of MA (i.e. Doctor of Art History). Taught at the Art School at the Typography of I.D. Sytin’s Company (1912—29), the State Printing School of the Peoples Commissariat of Education (1918—23), the Higher Art and Technical Workshop / Institution (1920—29), the Moscow Printing Institution (1930—36), the Moscow State Art Institution (1937—50), the Moscow All-Russian Art and Industrial School (1950—64).
